Why Foster Care

Every single year, thousands of Colorado children enter the child welfare system due to abuse and/or neglect. Those children need a safe and loving place to call home—whether that be for a week, a month, or a lifetime. This is why we do what we do.

Why does foster care exist?

Trust us, we ask this question too. It can seem unthinkable that children would be mistreated and neglected by their biological caregivers, but it happens every day and is usually derivative of generational trauma.

Every single child who enters the child welfare system has been the victim of abuse and/or neglect. In order for removal to occur, law enforcement must deem that there is imminent risk to the child or children in the home. Not potential risk. Imminent risk.

What have these children endured?

When a child is removed by the Department of Human Services, it’s a big deal. The action is in response to an imminent threat to their life and safety including:

  • Physical violence
  • Severe neglect
  • Malnourishment
  • Emotional trauma
  • Developmental stunting

Isn't this the government's responsibility?

It’s easy to look at the government to solve such a widespread issue, but they need our help too. Hope & Home is able to address the need with more agility and personalized care than would be possible otherwise.

We are reimbursed for one monthly visit by a staff member to each of our foster homes. But recruitment, licensing, training and support relies entirely on donor contributions.

Every child deserves to be a part of a loving family

True healing happens in the context of a loving, safe, nurturing family. As a community of Coloradans, we cannot afford to be passive in supporting these children.
